Gone Bush

Our wonderful friends the Dart family drove up to visit us here in Emerald and so we drove about 3 hrs south to meet them at Carnarvon Gorge to kick off their first visit to central queensland.  So join us on road trip south-- it`s school holidays up here and big machines still need to moved but this means dads have their sons riding along-a long slow job no doubt, wonder if they play eye spy?!?!

The road in to Carnarvon was full of cockies-- not very smart ones - they'd fly along in front of the car, flapping and flapping they didn't go off the side and let us pass they just kept flying along the road!!!!

We scared this cow!!!
 Yahheeee we arrived

Off to find the darts once we pulled in
they had a great set up and i can't tell you how wonderful it was to see them and get a hug!!

This is inside our little safari tent

it really is just a shed frame covered in canvas, but it was great-- till night when we had a snorer over our side of the camp, the walls seemed awfully thin then!!!
the hub of the tent! my red kettle so we could have cuppas and power to charge the phones and cameras!!!

We were off to explore the next day, now the "walk" was chosen. I think I should have been a billy goat it started off very pretty but looks can be decieving
Lots of cool river crossings

this orange pod of seeds looks good but  if eaten paralyses you and can kill - take a photo and move on!
this is where we were headed

the bottom of the up bit!
they left one thing off this sign, your calf muscles will scream for days after!!!!!
Ladders and steps, then more ladders and steps and then went up and up and up
But at the top it was MAGNIFICENT!!!

We set the camera up on a packet of shapes and a lunch box to get our group shot!

Back down we go

Heading to the moss gardens now

It was great to hike with Trace even tho she's supa fit she hung with me and chat and chat the whole way!

Now we were heading home.  The kids did an amazing job as we'd been walking for hours

cooling off was soooo good
A study of the map revealed we'd hiked 16.4km!!!!!
Yep I felt just like this guy just wanted to lie down and kick back
We did one better we bought ice creams and headed to the creek to cool off......ahhhhh

Later that evening on dusk we head down to this spot on the river to see if we could spy the platypus, you have to be quiet and low, we waited and waited and got dark that even if we did see anything we'd never be able to get a shot of it so Trace and I headed back to camp Paul stayed with his super brilliant spotlight and guess what, they saw the platypus!!! Oh well I got a shot of the platypus playground for you!!

Next morning this little guy came to breakfast, they were very vocal first thing in the morning you couldn't sleep in with all the cackling that was going on!

This is the river behind our hut, at night you hear the gurgle of the river
This is from the river looking back up at our tent you can just see it peeking out there in the middle
These two nuts in the river!

Then it was time to head home :(
On the way in we all commented on how there seemed to be an awful lot of cattle grids just how many no one knew so we all took a guess and the winner would buy ice creams!!

We counted 14 Cattle grids!!!!!! The winner was Paul with a guess of 12!!! The ice creams tasted great - thanks Paul!

three river crossings
and this cool cloud formation on the way home was eye catching

we pulled into the caravan park at emerald and we pass this bus and just have to show you

Check out the pot plants!!!!! and they were doing their washing!!! It was an impressive set up but who takes pot plants on their travels and hangs them up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That`s it for this post, its taken days and days as I've battled with the computer and it kept dumping me out and losing photos but hopefully it gives you a little taste of our weekend in the bush.

That jug looks like an electrical code violation!
Matt B was on those very rocks across the creek and posting photos of the view last week, can't believe you were both there so close to each other!
That honking big RV is how they do it over here. Kind of sad to see one over there. (They are here by the thousands... and as for the pot plants, I can see you doing some just as eccentric when the time comes!
